In the White Mountains of western Crete, a gorge about sixteen kilometers long descends from the Omalos plateau to the Libyan Sea, between imposing cliffs. At its narrowest point, the famous Portes, the walls come so close that they almost touch each other.

The route passes through cypress and pine trees, old abandoned villages and running waters, and ends at the sea of Agia Roumeli. It is an unforgettable experience.

How to get there from Heraklion

The starting point of the gorge, at Xyloskalos in Omalos, is about one hundred and eighty kilometers from Heraklion, a journey of about two and a half hours to the west. Due to the distance, most people start very early in the morning.

It is good to know that the gorge is only crossed in one direction, from top to bottom. You arrive by car at Omalos, walk down to Agia Roumeli, and from there take the boat to Chora Sfakion or Sougia and then a bus. Your own vehicle solves the most difficult part, access to the starting point, which is a hassle with public transport.

What to see and do

Enjoy the descent into the gorge, stop at Portes for the legendary photo and see the old village of Samaria. Upon reaching Agia Roumeli, a dip in the Libyan Sea is the ideal reward before the return boat.

Good to know

The route is demanding, requiring good physical condition, suitable hiking shoes, water and an early start. The canyon is usually open from mid-spring to autumn, depending on the conditions. Due to the distance and the organization it requires, it is worth planning it from the day before.

["post-1156","destination","type-destination","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
