Shortly after the crowds of the coast, at the foot of Psiloritis, Zaros introduces you to another Crete. It is a verdant mountain village famous for the crystal clear waters of its springs, with the small lake Votomos reflecting the pine trees and mountain peaks. The air smells of resin and mountains, the temperature is cooler, and the pace is slower.<\/p>\n
It is an ideal destination for those who want a break from the heat, a peaceful afternoon in the mountains and authentic Cretan cuisine.<\/p>\n
Zaros is approximately forty-five kilometers from Heraklion, a journey of about fifty minutes to the southwest, through vineyards and olive groves that slowly climb towards the mountain.<\/p>\n
You can easily reach Zaros by road and have the freedom to combine it with Phaistos and Messara, which are nearby, for a day that combines the mountain with history. Public transport to the mountains is limited.<\/p>\n
Take a tour of Lake Votomos and enjoy a trout meal by the water. The more active can walk through the Rouvas Gorge, a beautiful route through plane trees and running waters. In the village you will find traditional products and the famous bottled spring of Zaros.<\/p>\n
