Basic Driving Rules in Greece
In Greece we drive on the right side of the road. Speed limits are: 50 km/h in the city, 90 km/h outside the city, 120 km/h on the highway. The use of seat belts is mandatory for everyone.
Special Features of Cretan Roads
Crete has wonderful road networks but also peculiarities: narrow roads in the villages, sharp bends in the mountains, and goats walking on the road. Always be careful.
Fuel and Gas Stations
Fuel prices in Crete are similar to the rest of Greece (around 1.70-1.90 EUR/liter). In the major urban centers you will find many gas stations, but in the hinterland and southern Crete they are more sparse.
Parking
Parking in the cities of Crete can be a problem, especially in the summer. Tips:
- Use official parking (paid or free)
- Don't park in prohibited spots – the fines are high
- In the old town of Chania and Rethymno, you have qualified public parking.
Toll
The Heraklion-Chania national road has tolls (approximately 3 EUR). It is the only complete toll road in Crete.
What to Do in Case of an Accident
In case of an accident: call the police (100), ambulance (166), and inform the rental company immediately. In JK Tours We offer 24-hour roadside assistance.
Driving at Night
Avoid driving on rural or mountain roads at night. Lighting is limited and animals may be on the road. Main roads are safe at night.
