Vai Palm Forest

120 km from Heraklion, approximately 2 hours

Vai: the largest palm forest in Europe

On the eastern tip of Crete, Vai is a landscape that seems to have been taken from another continent. Thousands of palm trees, the largest natural palm grove in Europe, descend to a beach of white sand and turquoise waters. The image is so exotic that for years Vai was synonymous with posters for exotic holidays.

The palm grove is a protected area, so enjoy its beauty with respect, walking on the designated paths.

How to get there from Heraklion

Vai is about one hundred and twenty kilometers from Heraklion, a journey of about two hours to the east, via Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. It is a full-day excursion that requires a morning start.

What to see and do

Enjoy swimming in the clear waters and climb the small hill next to the beach for the classic view over the palm grove. There are quieter beaches nearby, such as Itanos, for those who want more peace and quiet. Combine with a stop in picturesque Sitia.

Good to know
