Elafonisi: the pink sand and lagoon of Crete

Elafonisi is perhaps the most famous beach in Crete, and rightly so. On the southwestern tip of the island, a shallow turquoise lagoon separates the coast from a small islet, and you can walk across it in the water. The sand here is tinted pink by crushed shells, and the waters are so clear and shallow that they resemble a swimming pool. It’s a sight to behold.

Despite its reputation, Elafonisi retains its wild beauty, with sand dunes, cedars and endless views of the sea.

How to get there from Heraklion

Elafonisi is far away, about one hundred and thirty-five kilometers from Heraklion, a journey of about two and a quarter hours. It is a full-day excursion that is worth it, especially if you start early in the morning. The road in the last part is narrow and winding, but the view and the destination are rewarding.

For such a distance, your own car is practically essential. It gives you the freedom to leave early, stop wherever you want along the way, and return at your leisure, without chasing itineraries.

What to see and do

Cross the islet through the shallow lagoon and find your favorite spot on the sand. The waters are ideal for families with children due to the shallowness. Take water, food, a hat and sunscreen with you, as supplies are limited. Combine the excursion with a stop at the historic monastery of Chrysoskalitissa, a few kilometers before.
