Balos: the lagoon on the edge of Crete

Balos is one of the most stunning landscapes in the Mediterranean. On the northwestern tip of Crete, a shallow lagoon of turquoise and emerald hues stretches between the mainland and the Gramvousa peninsula. The sand is tinged with pink, the waters are warm and shallow, and the view from above, as you descend towards the bay, takes your breath away.

It is a wild, almost exotic place, which despite its reputation maintains a sense of isolation.

How to get there from Heraklion

Balos is far away, about one hundred and sixty kilometers from Heraklion, a journey of about two and a half hours to Kissamos. From there there are two ways: the dirt road to the parking lot and then a hike of about twenty minutes to the lagoon, or the boat from the port of Kissamos.

It is a demanding, full-day excursion that requires an early start. With your own car you have the flexibility to leave early and return at your leisure. If you choose the dirt road, drive carefully.

What to see and do

Enjoy swimming in the shallow, warm waters of the lagoon and climb a little for the view from above, which is one of the most photographed in Crete. Take water, food, a hat and good shoes for hiking. Combine, if you like, with the island of Gramvousa and its Venetian castle.

Good to know

Facilities on Balos are minimal, so be prepared accordingly. There is little shade and the sun is strong. Due to the distance and the hiking, Balos is suitable for those who want a more adventurous day. Good shoes and plenty of water are all you need to reach the lagoon.
