Voulisma Beach

65 km from Heraklion, approximately 1 hour

Voulisma: the golden beach of the Gulf of Mirabello

Voulisma, also known as Golden Beach, is one of the most beautiful beaches in eastern Crete. In a sheltered cove near Istro, just before Agios Nikolaos, fine golden sand meets waters in incredible shades of turquoise and emerald. The surrounding mountains cut the wind, so the sea often remains calm as a lake.

It is organized, with umbrellas and taverns nearby, but it maintains the image of an exotic beach that is photographed again and again.

How to get there from Heraklion

Voulisma is approximately sixty-five kilometers from Heraklion, a comfortable drive of about an hour via the northern road towards Agios Nikolaos. In the last kilometers the road opens up to a magnificent view of the bay of Mirabello.

You can easily reach it by road and combine the beach with Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, which are nearby. This way you can have a complete day in eastern Crete without depending on itineraries.

What to see and do

Enjoy swimming in the shallow, warm waters, ideal for families with children. Next door is the smaller Kamini beach for those who want something quieter. Combine your visit with a walk to Agios Nikolaos and Lake Voulismeni or the bay of Elounda.

Good to know

In the summer months, Voulisma is popular, so arrive early for easy parking and a good spot on the sand. Take water and a hat with you. Go early in the morning, the difference in the color of the water and the quiet is great.
