Agios Pavlos: wild beauty on the south coast

On the southern side of Crete, where the mountains drop steeply into the Libyan Sea, Agios Pavlos is a small refuge for those seeking peace and wild beauty. A small beach with pebbles and sand, clear deep waters, and next to it the famous sand dunes that descend into the sea like a desert. The sunset here, with the sun sinking into the Libyan Sea, is one of the most beautiful on the island.

It is a relaxed and authentic place, far from the hustle and bustle of the north coast.

How to get there from Heraklion

Agios Pavlos is about ninety kilometers from Heraklion, a drive of about two hours to the southwest, through the plain of Messara and mountain villages. The last kilometers the road is narrow and winding, so careful driving is required.

With your own vehicle, you reach this relatively secluded corner and stay for the sunset. Public transport to the south coast is sparse.

What to see and do

Swim in the clear waters and climb the dunes for a unique view. Neighboring Triopetra, a few kilometers away, is also worth a stop. Stop for a drink or a meal at a tavern above the sea and enjoy the sunset at Livyko.

Good to know

There are few amenities, so bring water, a hat, and whatever else you need. Due to its distance, Agios Pavlos is best suited to a more relaxed, full-day excursion. Leave your schedule open, it's worth staying here until the sun sets on the Libyan Sea.
