Preveli Beach

90 km from Heraklion, approximately 2 hours

Preveli: the beach with the palm grove and the river

Preveli is one of the most special beaches in Crete. On the south coast, where the Kourtaliotis gorge meets the Libyan Sea, a freshwater river flows down between palm trees and out into the sea. The result is an almost tropical setting: golden sand, clear waters and a lush palm forest that rises along the river.

You can swim in the sea and immediately afterwards walk in the cool river, an experience that is hard to find elsewhere.

How to get there from Heraklion

Preveli is about ninety kilometers from Heraklion, a drive of about two hours, south of Rethymno through the impressive Kourtaliotis Gorge. The road is beautiful but winding in the last part.

From the parking lot you go down to the beach by a staircase and a path, a descent that takes a few minutes and good shoes. With your own car you arrive at your leisure and combine, if you wish, with the nearby monastery of Preveli.

What to see and do

Swim in the sea and hike along the river through the palm grove. Visit the historic monastery of Preveli high up, with views of the Libyan Sea. Take something to eat with you, as the beach facilities are limited.

Good to know

The descent and ascent require some physical fitness and comfortable shoes. Take water, a hat and sunscreen, because there is little shade. Save your strength for the return climb, it is the most demanding moment of the day.
